ktvu channel 2 morning news. good morning. thank you for waking up with us on this monday morning october 8th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm ken wayne. dave clark is off this morning. let's get a quick look at traffic and weather. steve, how is it looking? >> it looks cold and clear. some of the lows are getting down into the low to mid 40s. it will be a cooler day today. a little system to the west of us getting closer. that will give temperatures in the afternoon five degrees cooling from sunday. 60s and 70s. here is sal. steve, good morning. northbound 101 traffic that looks pretty good approaching the 80 split with no major problems. also looking at the commute if you are driving to the bay bridge we already have a crowd here at the toll plaza. 6:00 let's go back to the desk. topping our new there is is a big mess in downtown oakland after protestors targeted institutions from banks to city hall. tara moriarty is live in downtown oakland covering the effort to repair vandalized

buildings. >> reporter: some of the windows that protestors smashed have been boarded up but others have not. there is a gaping hole here in the front glass doors to city hall. there is a security guard here keeping watch. demonstrators threw paint balls and smashed windows not only at city hall but the oakland tribune office, the berkeley national lab office and three banks. the group of 200 people gathered at frank ogawa plaza last night at 6:00 and timed the rally to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the start of the u.s. war in afghanistan. around 7:15 the group headed north of west grand avenue and circled back to city hall that is when the violence broke out. two luxury cars were vandalized. protestors are taking their anger out on the wrong people. >> we work hard for our money. >> we are arch people and that is sending the wrong message. >> reporter: the march lasted only for 40 minutes and police say they didn't have time to call in for new chill aid or

make any type of arrest. so it will be interesting to see if police will do any follow up work. if they will find anybody on surveillance video to see who did this. and we have no count on the damage toll as far as the monetary loss. we will be finding out from oakland police a little bit later on this morning. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. the family of a woman murdered in hercules set up a website pleading for help. susie ko was found dead in her home on saturday night. the family is asking anyone to contact police immediately if they spot the car they say was stolen from her home at the time of the murder. it's described as a sky blue 2011 subaru outback with idaho license plates. families and friends will hold a candle light vigil in their neighborhood. the officer says he caught a car thief in the act on

lincoln boulevard in the presidio last night. investigators say the suspect jumped into another car and sped toward the officer who fired at the car. we don't know if anyone was hit. police are looking for two men in a tan buick. president obama comes back to the bay area today as part of his west coast swing to tap into what is being called the california atm for political fundraising. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is outside the bill graham civic auditorium where the president will appear at two events today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the presidents will be taking part in a dinner and concert fundraiser that will happen here at the bill graham civic auditorium in san francisco. that will be tonight. all to raise more campaign cash. r & b singer john legend will be on hand to perform. and earlier this afternoon once the president arrives here he also has an event at the intercontinental hotel where alex smith is expected to attend. mr. obama spent yesterday down in l.a. doing fundraising as well.

he spoke at a star studded event that included a performance by stevey wonder. his two day event could push the president over the $1 billion mark in fundraising. in september he hauled in a record setting $181 million. now despite his lackluster debate performance, the president last night struck a confident tone at the event. >> but here's the good news is we've got a better vision for our country. we have a better plan for the next four years. >> reporter: and before the president flies up to the bay area this afternoon, he will make a stop into central valley in the town of king, california. that is where he will announce the establishment of the caesar chavez national monument. of course once the president arrives here in the bay area, you can obviously expect a lot of his supporters to be on hand for the various events but the president's visit will not come without protest as well.

several groups including the bay area veterans against the afghanistan occupation plan to quote crash the president's visit. we are live this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. republican presidential nominee mitt romney is scheduled to deliver a foreign policy speech today at the virginia military institute. coming up at 6:15, the changes romney says he would make in u.s. middle east policy and the results of poll in the presidential race. early voting begins in california today. if you want to vote early head to your county election office, but most county offices are closed today because of columbus day. ballots for people voting by mail will be sent tomorrow when the post office reopens from the holiday. 32 states and the district of columbia offer some form of early voting. today california gasoline prices are setting another record. a gallon averages $4.67 a gallon. now governor brown is taking a step that could bring prices

down. he told the state air resources board to transition into winter blend gasoline now instead of waiting until halloween. some refineries already transitioned to making refinery gas. relief at the pump can't come soon enough for california drivers. some people like cab drivers and delivery people have to pay for gas just to do their jobs. others say they are finding ways to cut back on how much they drive or in some case what is they drive. >> i try not to drive unless i really have to. >> i'm grateful and i also only use the bike when necessary. >> many say gas prices will go down possibly sometime this week. they are just not saying how much gas prices could drop. a judge will decide to postpone pg&e pipeline hearings. the hearings follow the deadly pipeline explosion in san bruno two years ago. on friday they filed a motion to postpone the hearings until

next month. state assemblyman jerry hill says he will ask the judge to reject that request. power has been restored to thousands of customers in hayward following a crash that took out a power pole. police say a driver hit a pole near cheney lane and cal hoe georgia avenue. at the height of the outage about 5,000 customers were without power. it is columbus day so maybe traffic is not as bad as it might normally be on a monday. let's check in with sal. >> we are checking that out. right now traffic seems to be sort of normal but it might not last as long. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. it is backed up and pretty soon the middle part will fill in as well. when the metering lights come on. columbus day is not one of the holidays every single person gets. at least most people don't get. some people do. you will see traffic okay on the bridge getting into san francisco. interstate 880 north and southbound near the oakland coliseum that traffic is looking good. if you are driving to hayward

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. there is new developments a message sent the day ambassador chris stephs was kill -- stevens was killed was threats. it talked about the danger and instability in eastern libya it did not however ask the government for security upgrades. stevens was killed along with three other americans in an attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. there is new information coming in this morning surrounding the deadly shooting of a u.s. border patrol agent last week. the border patrol union says agent nicholas io vie apparently open -- ivy apparently opened fire on two his colleagues thinking they were armed smugglers. the shooting happened in a hilly area known for ill leal trafficking -- illegal trafficking. a backpack found in a

suburb belongs to a missing girl. ridgeway was last seen leaving for school on friday. she was not reported missing for eight hours because her mother works the overnight shift and missed calls from the school. republican presidential nominee mitt romney will give a foreign speech today criticizing president obama as a weak leader on the stage. jacqueline fells is in our washington, d.c. newsroom. >> reporter: pam, mitt romney's campaign is offering fresh details this morning on how would represent the u.s. on the world stage if elected. president barack obama's team is firing back on the defense. mitt romney will criticize's the president's handling on the libyan attacks. one say his speech will be a

u.s. navy explanation for radiation contamination in treasure island inadequate. it doesn't explore the possibility the base may have been dusted with radio active ash or soaked with radio active sewage. the radio acknowledged the history was more wide spread than usually thought. san francisco police continue look for the person that shot and killed a man in the south of market neighborhood. police found two men suffering from gunshot wounds early yesterday morning in a car near third and mission street. one man died at the scene. the other man now has nonlife threatening injuries. there are reports the shooter drove off in a silver toyota rav 4 possibly with front end damage. the california highway patrol is looking for the cause of a fatal car crash that killed a 21-year-old woman.

that happened at 7:45 yesterday morning at the sunol boulevard off ramp on northbound interstate 680. chp says leslie flores veered off the freeway and crashed into the ravine. she was thrown from the car and died at the scene. no word of any other injuries. new details this morning one expert says data from lance armstrong's blood shows he is most likely guilty of doping. scientists who specializes in blood doping told california watch samples from the 2009 tour de france suggest that armstrong used doping methods. they plan to make more information public later this week. we could see witness testimony from some of armstrong's teammates. armstrong says he is innocent. the winners of the nobel prize in medicine or physiology were announced in stockholm this morning. they were awarded the prize for discovering that certain cells

ken wayne. dave clark is off this morning. >> i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. it's now 6:30. a group of protestors left a trail of destruction in downtown oakland. ktvu tara moriarty is out there at city hall this morning. one of the several buildings and businesses that were vandalized last night. >> reporter: a lot of damage but no arrests. this protest didn't last very long so police weren't able to call in for mutual aid and make any arrests. you can see the damage on city hall the front doors the holes in the glass there still not boarded up. around 7:15 last night demonstrators started throwing paint balls and smashing windows not only at city hall but the oakland tribune office, the berkeley national lab office, and three banks. the group of about 200 people gathered earlier in the evening and timed the rally to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the war in afghanistan. the group went on a march.

two luxury cars were vandalized and their owners tell us protestors are taking their anger out on the wrong people. >> i could understand at some point, but this is wrong. >> it's wrong what they are doing. >> reporter: again no arrests were made. but police could have some leads. we'll keep you posted on that. as far as how much money this will cost to repair the estimates haven't come back in yet. live in oakland i'm tara moriarty. meantime about 20 protestors were arrested in san francisco. the how and why they were arrested varies. more than their arrest over the weekend and possible connection to an attack on a police station next month. in overnight news oakland police are investigating a shooting that injured one person. it happened just after 11:00 last night on church street. the victim showed up at the

east mont police station in a car that was riddled with bullet holes. we don't know the victims condition this morning. so far no arrests have been made. an investigation is under way after a body was found inside a car in east oakland. the body was found around 5:00 yesterday afternoon at richy and olive street. police say the body was wrapped in cloth and apeered to with -- and appeared to be in the car for awhile. gas prices went up again while you were sleeping overnight. ktvu reporter matt keller is in the newsroom with more on how the governor is trying to step in to keep the prices down. >> reporter: we have the new numbers from aaa this morning. scalds broke another record -- california broke another record. gas prices rose to $4.64 a gallon. governor jerry brown is hoping the latest move will help bring prices down. he ordered state smog regulators to allow winter

blend gasoline to be sold earlier than usual. delivery drivers get reimbursed by the mile but not for fuel so the high prices are cutting into their pay. >> when the gas is really high, it's hard to hire people. >> reporter: analysts say gas prices could hit as high as $4.85 a gallon before coming back down. one station in long beach has the highest price in the state at $6.65 a gallon. to give you an idea how high the prices are. you would pay a little more than $178 for gas. i found a round trip plane attribute for about $25 less. reporting live in the newsroom matt keller. well go big or go home. ktvu channel 2 reporter allie rasmus is live in half-moon bay where pumpkin growers are competing in a big weighoff. they're trying to set a new world record this year.

allie how are they doing? >> reporter: the stage is set for the weighoff that will begin in a half hour from now. we see organizers come out here. they have a giant forklift they will be using. you can see it right off to the right here. a giant forklift they have to use that to hoist the pumpkins on to this digital scale you see here. some of the pumpkins will be 1600 possibly 1700 pounds. maybe even bigger than that. now amateur growers are competing for thousands of dollars in prizes and the prize for winning first -- and the price for winning first prize. there is also a $25,000 prize if any of the pumpkins here today break a world record. the world's heaviest pumpkin weighs more than 2,000 pounds. >> i think the world record

prize is in every serious growers sight. we grow first for ourselves and then for our local weighoffs but everybody wants a world record. that is the ultimate goal about growers. >> reporter: now sad start from pleasant hill oregon drove his pumpkin here. his pumpkin is looking like it's the largest of all the top contenders here although he is a lite superstitious so he doesn't want to estimate how much it weighs. he believes it's above 1600 pounds. it's about 100 days old. they are grown around the same time or start to grow them around the same time in the spring. it's amazing to think something so big starts from a little seed. there is a lot of money at stake here. they've got the panel set up where they will post all the names of all the top contenders. the growers. where that pumpkin was groan. where it came from. and it all gets started just a half hour from now. live in half-moon bay i'm allie

rasmus. >> thank you. the streets of san francisco should start to look normal again this morning after a very busy weekend in the city. despite having more than a million visitors in san francisco for several events, things went pretty well. there is only one more thing happening today and that is the final day of fleet week. you can tell it was a busy weekend in the city by looking at all the traffic on streets and the crowds on public transit. bart broke its weekend ridership record on saturday with more than 319,000 passengers. on muni it was pretty much standing room only. but passengers say despite the tight conditions, they did manage to get where they needed to go. we put together a slide shows of all of the big weekend events at ktvu.com. click on the photos tab on the home page. right now we want to check in with sal for a look at traffic. monday morning ken mentioned

the lobby between guests from two separate wedding parties. 57-year-old man an uncle of one of the brides suffered ahearted attack and later died. three people were taken into custody and several others ended up at local hospitals. san francisco police say many of the protestors arrested on saturday are suspected in a similar protest in the mission district last month. there are pictures are some of the 11 men and nine women police rounded up on california battery streets in the city. officers say they wore black clothing and masks and tried to conduct a march on market street without a permit. this is video of police moving in to arrest those protestors. they are accused of trying to block the road and damaging cars and businesses. officers struck some of the people with batons but police say the protestors struck first by throwing things at home hitting one officer in the head. >> protestors threw zip lock bags of paint at the officers.

welcome to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. taking a look at the big board. dagobas down about -- dow jones down about 40 points. they are following suit after europe and asia was hit hard. state regulators are cracking down on two companies that claim to be a -- the california public utilities commission issued an order against side car and lift. they lack the required permits that make sure drivers are properly licensed, screened, and insured to carry passengers. according to a notice sent to the companies, the commission now has the right to impound cars that impose fines up to $5,000 a day or jail time. a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak is growing. there at least 91 confirmed cases and seven deaths. the cases have been report reported in nine states but none in california.

but it has been linked to a steroid used to treat back pain. it has since been voluntarily recalled. health officials say thousands could receive the injections. attorneys in jerry sandusky sex abuse case will meet with a judge today. one day before he is sentenced. the former penn state assistant football coach faces life in prison after being found guilty on 45 counts of child sex abuse. sandusky is expected to speak in his own defense. his attorney says he does not plan to apologize and will maintain his innocence. the san francisco board of supervisors will finally decide tomorrow whether suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi will keep his job. the board will vote at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. nine of the 11 board members must vote against mirkarimi in order to permanently remove him from office. this comes after he pleaded guilty to false imprisonments
